The Challenge

Running applications in the cloud can offer companies many advantages: Scaling applications, introducing new services more quickly, making new technologies easy to use and much more. SEFE Storage GmbH, an international energy company, has recognized this and is migrating an Exxeta application environment to the cloud. The application runs on a data center shared with Exxeta - which is not only very resource-intensive, but also repeatedly leads to avoidable problems. Time to change that!

The challenge: the application is business-critical, runs around the clock in 24/7 operation and must continue to run stably immediately after migration without downtime.

The Solution

We are migrating the business-relevant application environment to the AWS cloud for SEFE Storage GmbH. We have an intensive partnership with AWS that offers the customer a wide range of benefits. In doing so, we rely on so-called re-platforming. This means that we can make the best possible use of the managed services in the cloud, do not have to change the code base and thus strictly guarantee business continuity. An important requirement for SEFE Storage GmbH.

After all, the natural gas storage company is of great importance for the security of supply in Europe - uninterrupted continued operation is therefore essential.

Silent migration

Our migration strategy includes an upstream transition phase. In this phase, we specify that all third-party connections are to be converted to an empty cloud bridgehead before the actual migration. Only then do we move the actual on-prem application landscape in a meticulously planned cut-over via re-platforming. The aim of this procedure is to prevent negative effects on third parties and avoid a “big bang” effect.

We use the following AWS services for re-platforming:

  • RDS for Oracle

  • Document DB 

  • Auto-scaling

In a nutshell

The goal - to migrate the existing application environment to the cloud as “silently” as possible - without any noticeable impact on the connected market partners and registration offices. We were able to guarantee this. But the benefits go further: with the migration, we are creating an efficient SaaS operating model managed entirely by Exxeta. In this way, SEFE Storage GmbH benefits from all the cloud advantages and can continue to develop the Exxeta solution together with us without any problems. A plus: the company does not have to worry about operation or maintenance.
